Good news is that 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' is looking way better then the first film so hopefully this sequel will be the rare one to improve on the original. Check out the slew of images that have hit below.
When it was announced that there was going to be a sequel for 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra', many sighed and just figured this was just another stupid studio movie, but then they began adding some meat to the cast. Dwayne Johnson was a big one, and he seems to be that actor who gets added to film sequels to beef up the star wattage, and then Bruce Willis was added. The studio was obviously counting on the fact that Channing Tatum's star has risen considerably and he's in 5 films this year. 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' and 'Magic Mike' (released on the same day for some interesting counter programming) will be the final movies of the year for him.
“In this movie putting a face on who Joe is — in Bruce Willis — and that idea of having the original Joe is great for the audience that doesn’t know the Joe of the 1980s but knows the Joe of the 1960s and 1970s,” Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura said. “There’s a combination of these things coming together in a really great way.”
di Bonaventura also confirmed that with Tatum's rising star, this would help draw in the crowds, but obviously adding Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis gave the studio a better night of sleep. “We have a couple of advantages: Channing is a bigger star [than he was when the first was released], Bruce is a well-established star and Rock is a well-established star,” di Bonaventura said. “That’s a big advantage over the first movie. That positions us in a way that we can say to the audience that we’re trying for a certain kind of film.”
As you can see in the trailer and Super Bowl spot, you have to look really hard to find Tatum, and the same goes with the movie stills. Johnson and Willis are the stars giving our Magic Mike man a nice boost. As we all know if the film kills at the box office, then every studio and Tatum's agent will say that it proves he's a star.
